Payroll

Payroll for directors and small teams, without the admin

We set up your payroll, recommend a tax-efficient salary based on your circumstances and file every pay run with HMRC for you. And because it lives right alongside your bookkeeping, your salary, tax bill and accounts always line up.

  • Included in your £60 + VAT plan

01How it works

We run your payroll, you get on with your day

  1. 1

We set it up for you.

Your accountant gathers what's needed and recommends a tax-efficient salary based on your personal circumstances, like any other income you have. Mighty then plans every pay run up to the end of the tax year.

  2. 2

    We file it with HMRC.

Each month we file your pay run with HMRC on or before payday. If nobody's being paid that month, we file a nil return instead, so HMRC doesn't assume something's missing and come chasing.

  3. 3

You can see it all, any time.

Your payslips, PAYE bill and bookkeeping sit together in Mighty, so you can see what you've been paid, what you owe HMRC and when it's due whenever you log in. Most accountants run payroll in separate software, so you'd have to ask.

  4. 4

We change it when life does.

Taken on other work, started a pension or had a baby? Let your accountant know and we'll review your salary and update your payroll for the rest of the tax year, so it stays tax-efficient.

02What's included

Everything payroll needs, in one place

  • Director salaries

We'll recommend a tax-efficient salary based on your personal circumstances, and Mighty handles the special National Insurance rules that apply to directors.

  • Your first hires

Taking someone on? We'll add them with starter declarations, tax codes and student loan deductions all taken care of. From your first hire to a small team of four or five, we've got you covered.

  • Payslips, P60s and P45s

Download your payslips whenever you need them, or have them emailed automatically every pay run. We email P60s after the tax year ends, and P45s when someone leaves.

  • Employment Allowance

If your company's eligible, we'll claim up to £10,500 off your employer National Insurance bill. If you're a one-person company you usually can't, and we'll tell you that straight rather than let a claim go in that HMRC will reverse.

  • Already in your books

Every pay run appears in your bookkeeping the moment it's filed, with nothing to copy across, so your accounts and corporation tax always reflect what you've actually paid.

  • Switching mid-year

Joining us partway through the tax year? We'll bring across what's already been paid, so your year-to-date figures are right from your very first pay run with Mighty.

03Your accountant

Software that does the sums, accountants who check them

Most months, payroll should just happen in the background. But now and then life gets in the way, whether that's hiring someone, getting a new tax code from HMRC or planning time off for a new baby. That's when it helps to have a real person on your side. Your dedicated accountant sets everything up with you, checks every submission and is always just an email or a call away.

04Know what to pay HMRC

No more guessing what you owe

Your NI and PAYE schedule shows what's due to HMRC each quarter (or each month, if that's how you pay), broken down month by month with the due date and payment reference for each. You'll get reminders on your dashboard and by email before anything's due, and you can export the schedule if you'd like a copy.

05Advanced payroll

The trickier bits of payroll, at no extra cost

Payroll gets more involved as your business grows or life changes. All of this is included in your plan, with your accountant handling the detail.

  • Maternity and paternity pay

We work out what you're entitled to from your due date, run it through payroll and reclaim it from HMRC for you, usually in full.

  • Workplace pensions

Auto-enrolment contributions are calculated and deducted through payroll. For now you pay them over to your provider yourself, and our NEST integration is on its way.

  • Directors and staff outside the UK

Live abroad? We'll set your payroll up with the right tax code and National Insurance category for your situation.

  • Leavers and closing payroll

If someone leaves, we report it to HMRC and send their P45. If you stop paying salaries altogether, we'll close your PAYE scheme properly so HMRC stops expecting returns.

We cover statutory maternity, paternity, adoption, shared parental and sick pay.

Included in your plan

Payroll for you, your fellow directors and your spouse is included in the Mighty plan, from £60 + VAT a month, and so is everything in advanced payroll, including maternity and paternity pay. Each additional employee who isn't a director or your spouse is £5 + VAT a month. No set-up fees and no additional charges per payslip.

FAQs

Payroll questions, answered

Can't see yours? Book a free call and ask an accountant.

Can Mighty run payroll for employees, not just me?

Yes. Alongside directors, we run payroll for small teams of up to four or five people. Payroll for directors and spouses is included, and each additional employee is £5 + VAT a month.

Do I need to run payroll every month?

No. We set your payroll up for you and Mighty schedules every pay run for the tax year. We file each one with HMRC, and if there's a month where nobody's paid, we file a nil return so HMRC knows nothing's missing.

What salary should I pay myself as a director?

We'll recommend one based on your personal circumstances, as the right figure depends on things like your other income. Many directors with no other income set their salary at the personal allowance, which is £12,570 for 2026/27. That keeps income tax and employee National Insurance at zero while still counting towards your state pension.

Does Mighty handle statutory maternity and paternity pay?

Yes, and there's no extra charge for it. Mighty works out your entitlement from your due date, runs it through payroll and we file the reclaim with HMRC each month. You can choose to take statutory pay only, top it up to your normal salary or take it on top of your salary.

Can my company get maternity or paternity pay back from HMRC?

Usually, yes. If your company paid £45,000 or less in Class 1 National Insurance last tax year, which covers most small companies, you can reclaim 100% of statutory pay plus an extra amount towards National Insurance. We file the reclaim for you, and can help you apply for the money in advance.

Do you handle workplace pensions and auto-enrolment?

We calculate and deduct auto-enrolment contributions through payroll. At the moment you'll pay the contributions over to your pension provider yourself, and our NEST integration is coming soon.

Can I payroll benefits in kind?

Not yet, but we will before it becomes mandatory in April 2027. Until then, your accountant will talk you through how any benefits, such as private medical insurance, are reported.

Do you send payslips and P60s?

Yes. You can download your payslips any time, or choose to have them emailed automatically every pay run. We email your P60 once the tax year has ended, and P45s whenever someone leaves.

I'm switching from another accountant partway through the year. Is that a problem?

Not at all. We'll bring across what's already been paid this tax year, so your year-to-date figures are right from your first pay run with Mighty and your accounts pick up the full year's salary cost.

What happens if I stop paying myself a salary?

If it's just a break, we'll file nil returns for the months you're not paid and keep your payroll ticking over. If you're stopping for good, we'll report any leavers, issue P45s and close your PAYE scheme properly, so HMRC stops expecting submissions.
